Bangkok's famous Grand Palace was built in 1782 for King Rama I. Today it houses not only the royal family but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Palace covers an area of 218,000 square meters and is surrounded by four walls, a total of 1900 meters in length.
